State Department recommends Americans not to go to Russia and Crimea

The US State Department recommends that Americans refrain from traveling to Russia and the territory of the occupied Crimea.

According to June 15 promulgated documentThe agency recommends that US citizens reconsider their decisions regarding travel to the territory of the Russian Federation, including visiting the World Cup.

According to the Department, in some regions of Russia there is an increased risk of terrorism, aggression and persecution of foreigners. In particular, Americans are advised not to visit Chechnya and Mount Elbrus “due to social unrest and manifestations of terrorism,” and also not to travel to Russian-occupied Ukrainian Crimea “due to foreign occupation and abuse of power by the occupying authorities.”

The department noted that a significant presence of Russian troops remains on the peninsula, moreover, the US government cannot guarantee its citizens security on the territory of the peninsula, since US civil servants are prohibited from traveling to Crimea.

Separately, the department explained why you should not attend the FIFA World Cup taking place in Russia. One of the main threats is terrorists, who can plan attacks in places popular among tourists, as well as in crowded areas - transport hubs, shopping centers, local governments and all objects related to the championship.

“From June 14 to July 15, 2018, the 2018 FIFA World Cup games will be held in Moscow, St. Petersburg, Kazan, Sochi, Volgograd, Yekaterinburg, Kaliningrad, Nizhny Novgorod, Rostov-on-Don, Samara and Saransk. Large international events such as the World Cup are attractive targets for terrorists,” the warning said.

The State Department stressed that increased security measures at championship facilities are not a guarantee of complete protection against terrorist attacks or their attempts.

Also, according to the ministry, the threat to foreigners may come from Russian law enforcement officers, since cases of their ill-treatment and detention of foreigners have already been recorded.

Americans who still decide to go to Russia, the State Department asks to adhere to the following tips:

If you decide to go to Russia:

• Be prepared for a large concentration of police and enhanced security measures at all World Cup sites;
• Avoid demonstrations;
• Keep up to date with local news on recent events and adjust your plans based on this information;
• Be vigilant in places frequented by western tourists;
• Always carry documents with you, make sure that you have the opportunity, if necessary, to quickly and easily get them;
• Subscribe to the pages of the State Department at Facebook or Twitterto be notified of threats or changes in the situation;
• Check out reports on crime and security in Russia;
• Before you travel, develop an emergency plan and a plan to inform your family that you are safe;
