Gender equality: the Church will no longer call God the Lord

In Sweden, Lutheran ministers will no longer refer to God as “he” or “Lord.” As he writes The Guardian, these messages will be replaced with more gender-neutral words. It is suggested that the word “god” be considered a more preferable option.

The recommendation was adopted on November 23 and will come into effect on May 20 of 2018.

The head of the Church of Sweden, Archbishop of Uppsala Antje Jakelen, told the Swedish news agency TT that the transition of the Church of Sweden to a more neutral language was discussed back in 1986. “Theologically speaking, God is beyond our gender definitions, God is not a person,” she said.

The Church of Sweden faced criticism because of its decision. Assistant professor of theology at Lund University Krister Palmblad said the Danish newspaper Kristeligt dagbladthat it undermines the doctrine of the Holy Trinity and the reputation of the Church of Sweden among other Christian churches. "It's not good if it becomes known as a church that doesn't respect the common theological heritage," he said.

The church of Sweden is considered the largest in the country. Formally, this church covers about 6,4 million people, or 67,5% of the population. Until 2000, the church was state.
