French writer Frederic Beigbeder arrested on rape charges

In France, on December 12, writer Frederic Beigbeder was detained. According to preliminary data, the police are investigating a rape case, reports NDTV.

The 58-year-old writer was detained in Pau, France, and taken for questioning over rape charges.

Prosecutor Rodolphe Jarry said the arrest was not drug-related.

The prosecutor declined to say why he was detained, but sources close to the investigation said the arrest followed a rape allegation made by a woman with whom the author had been in a relationship for several months.

Broadcaster Franceinfo reported that the woman filed the complaint in the summer. The woman said she had consensual sexual contact with Beigbeder in a hotel room, and then another non-consensual one that same night.

During the Me Too movement, he caused controversy by not condemning celebrities accused of sexual misconduct. He also defended director Roman Polanski, who was convicted of rape, from his critics, calling them "a pack of hyenas on the loose."

In 2008, Beigbeder was arrested in Paris for the use and possession of cocaine. He later said he had given up using cocaine, which he called "an old man's drug."

In his works, Beigbeder explored love, sex, politics and the glamorous life of Paris. He rose to fame with his 2000 novel 99 Francs, which explored drugs, cynicism and money in the world of advertising.

His other successful novels include Coma Holiday and Love Lasts Three Years, but he has also worked as a television and radio commentator, publisher, actor and film director, and ran the men's magazine Louie for four years.

Earlier this year, Beigbeder said his lifestyle had "completely changed" since living with his third wife, photographer Lara Micheli, and two children in Guetary, a village of 1350 people on the Basque coast.
