The European Parliament approved the abolition of visas for Ukraine: how it will work

The European Parliament supported the abolition of the visa regime for Ukraine when visiting its citizens of the Schengen countries. After a few weeks, the European Council should approve the decision.

This decision was supported by 521 deputies, 75 were against, 36 abstained, writes Air force.

Now the abolition of visas for citizens of Ukraine to be approved by the EU Council. The decision will come into force after its publication in the official journal of the European Union. The negotiations of Ukraine and the EU on the visa-free regime have been going on since 2008; during this time, as recognized in the EU, Ukraine has fulfilled its obligations.

“The European Parliament’s approval of a visa-free regime with Ukraine is a historic vote not only for our country, but also for a united Europe. This is a well-deserved reward for Ukrainians for their faith in the European idea,” Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko commented on the deputies’ decision.

1. How to use the right visa-free travel?

In order to use the right of visa-free trips to the Schengen zone, you need to issue a foreign biometric passport (in the units of the State Migration Service, and abroad - in the diplomatic institutions of Ukraine).

To travel in a visa-free regime, a citizen of Ukraine must be prepared to provide information to the border services of European countries, including documented, about the purpose of the trip, availability of residence, sufficient funds for the planned period of stay, as well as confirmation of the intention to return to Ukraine (for example, , return ticket).

Citizens of Ukraine will also need to purchase a medical insurance policy and civil liability insurance of the vehicle owner (in the case of traveling by car).

2. Terms of visa

The visa-free regime allows short-term stay in EU member states (with the exception of the UK and Ireland) and other member states of the Schengen Agreement дo 90 days for 180 days.

In case you need to stay in the EU longer, you will need to apply for a visa.

A visa-free regime will not give the right to reside, work, or study in EU countries.

That is, we can say that a visa-free regime is useful mainly for tourist trips, or, for example, for short-term courses up to 90 days.

3. Countries without visas

Citizens of Ukraine will be able to travel without visas to all EU member states (with the exception of the UK and Ireland), as well as to the 4 of the state-member of the Schengen agreement: Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland.

Thus, obtaining a visa is not required during trips to the following states: Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Greece, Denmark, Estonia, Iceland, Spain, Italy, Cyprus, Latvia, Lithuania, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Hungary, Finland, France, Croatia, Czech Republic, Switzerland, Sweden.

4. What can they refuse to enter?

Border services may refuse to enter the territory of the country in question if it is impossible for a citizen of Ukraine to provide information on the purpose of entry, lack of financial resources, if such a person is on the list of persons who were previously denied entry.

The experience of introducing a visa-free regime with Moldova showed that due to the inadequate fulfillment of the conditions of a visa-free regime by individuals, non-unit cases of refusals of entry at the border are recorded.

In the absence of documents that adequately confirm the purpose of the trip, the border services may require additional documents. That is why it is recommended that citizens of Ukraine necessarily take care of the documents that will confirm the purpose of the trip.

5. And if the passport is old sample?

Citizens who have a valid Schengen visa and international passport of the old sample will be able to enter the EU after the introduction of a visa-free regime.
