The former head of the CIA is convicted
Former CIA Head David Petraeus pleaded guilty in the transfer of classified information and was sentenced by the court of the city of Charlotte to two years of probation and a fine of 100 thousand dollars.
The retired general admitted that he passed on information containing the state secret to his mistress Paul Broadwell, who wrote his biography.
The judge raised the amount of the fine from 40 thousand dollars, which was negotiated in a transaction with the US Department of Justice, noting that it is necessary to toughen the punishment.
Petraeus resigned from his position as head of the CIA in 2012, after it became clear that he was intimate with the journalist who worked on his biography.
David Petraeus served more than 37 for years in the US military. In September, 2011, he was appointed to the post of the head of the CIA. In November 2012, the general resigned because of an extra-marital affair with his biographer Paula Broadwell. In January, Petraeus 2015 was accused of transmitting Broadwell, writing his biography, of documents about the operation in Afghanistan, which contained the names of secret agents, the strategy of the war, and the general's conversations with President Barack Obama.
