Independence Day of Ukraine in New York
Today, Ukraine celebrates the 24 anniversary of the declaration of its independence. In New York, the celebrations began with a race in Central Park: the choice of those who decided to join the race in embroidered shirts offered three distances, from one to three kilometers.
A prerequisite for the participants was to come in national clothes and sports shoes. Although not all fled, but everyone was ill for the athletes and were happy to take pictures and explain to passersby why there are so many Ukrainian flags in the park.
More than two hundred people came to take part in the sports competition for the title of “fastest Bandera resident.”
The race was not on time, but everyone tried to run as fast as they hurried to join the main flash mob in Times Square.
On the page of the event in Times Square, where Ukrainians were invited to celebrate Independence Day, about five hundred people registered, but in fact the entire square was filled with Ukrainians who came to New York to take part in a flash mob, the goal of which was to make the words “Glory to the Heroes” from flags ", in order to express support for the soldiers of the ATO (anti-terrorist operation) in the East of Ukraine.
The words from the flags could not be folded, but thousands of voices, sounded from the main staircase in the square, sang the Ukrainian anthem.
Among officials, the event was visited by the Ambassador of Ukraine to the UN, Yuriy Sergeev.
Despite the failed flash mob, the event turned out to be very warm and inspiring, after the singing of the Ukrainian anthem, as one, the people continued to sing famous Ukrainian songs.
The American police, perplexed by the crowd of thousands of people in national dress, peacefully asked the gathered Ukrainians to disperse around the square, since such accumulations of people must be reported to the mayor's office and receive the appropriate permission, which was not done. However, the event was peaceful.
None of the “Banderaites” (as Ukrainians like to call themselves), who are no strangers to national holidays and attributes, were harmed.
