Former Republicans and Democrats have created a new party in the US: they hope to make it the third ruling party in the country

Dozens of former Republican and Democratic officials announced the creation of a new political party in the country. The new party, called Forward, will be created by former Democratic presidential candidate Andrew Yang and Christine Todd Whitman, the former Republican governor of New Jersey. They hope the party will become a viable alternative to the Republican and Democratic parties that dominate US politics.

This fall, party leaders will hold a series of events in two dozen cities to roll out their platform and rally support. They will hold an official opening in Houston, Texas on September 24 and the party's first national convention in a major US city next summer.

The new party is being formed by the merger of three political groups that have emerged in recent years as a reaction to the increasingly polarized and stalled American political system. The leaders cited a Gallup poll last year that found a record two-thirds of Americans believe a third party is essential to American politics.

The merger involves: Renew America Movement, created in 2021 by dozens of former officials of the Republican administrations of various presidents; the Forward Party, founded by Young, who left the Democratic Party in 2021 and went independent; The Serve America Movement is a group of Democrats, Republicans, and independents whose executive director is former Republican Congressman David Jolly.

The two pillars of the new party's platform are to "revitalize a fair, prosperous economy and give Americans more electoral choice, more confidence in a working government."

Historically, third parties have failed to move forward in America's two-party system. Sometimes they can influence presidential elections. Analysts say Green Party member Ralph Nader blew enough votes away from Democratic presidential candidate Al Gore in 2000 to help Republican George W. Bush win.

It is not clear how the new party could affect the electoral prospects of any party. Political scientists doubt that it will succeed.

The public reaction on Twitter was swift. Many Democrats on social media have expressed fears that the new party will take more votes from Democrats than Republicans and ultimately help the Republicans win.

Forward aims to have party registration and ballot access in 30 states by the end of 2023 and all 50 states by the end of 2024, just in time for the 2024 presidential and congressional elections. They are aimed at nominating candidates for local elections such as school and city councils, the House of Representatives, the US Congress, and all the way to the presidency.

"Fundamentals have changed"

In an interview, Young said that everything will start with a budget of about $5 million, and noted that he already has sponsors.

“We are starting from a very strong financial position. Financial support will not be a problem,” Yang assured.

Another person involved in the creation of the Forward, Miles Taylor, a former Homeland Security official in the Donald Trump administration, said the idea was to give voters a "viable, credible national third party."

Taylor acknowledged that third parties had failed in the past, but remarked, “The fundamentals have changed. When other third party movements have arisen in the past, it has mostly been within the system where the American people are not looking for alternatives.”

Stew Rothenberg, an experienced non-partisan political analyst, said it's easy to talk about creating a third party, but almost impossible to do so.

"The two main political parties have a huge advantage," he said.

Rothenberg observed that third-party presidential candidates, such as John Anderson in 1980 and Ross Perot in 1992 and 1996, failed by failing to create a true third party that would become an influential factor in national politics.
