Most judges in Alabama refused to register same-sex marriage
Most judges in the US state of Alabama refused to register same-sex marriage, reports The Christian Science Monitor. This happened after the US Supreme Court 9 February refused to suspend the decision of the federal court to lift the state ban on such unions.
According to the gay rights group Human Rights Campaign, 53 state district judges from 67 do not register such marriages.
Roy Moore, Chief Justice of the Alabama Supreme Court, ordered judges to disobey federal orders. In addition, he called on the governor of Alabama, Robert Bentley, to “take measures” against those who decide to cooperate with the federal authorities in this matter.
The National Marriage Support Organization issued a call for residents of Alabama to continue to obey the state law on marriage. According to the president of this organization, Brian Brown, in 2006, an amendment to the State Constitution banning same-sex unions was adopted, which was supported by the percentage of voters 81.
