California and other states call 50 a ton of injected meat

The US Department of Agriculture (USDA) announced a massive recall of ground beef because of fears of infecting it with deadly bacteria E. coli O157: H7.

Beef Co., a Swiss company located in Utah, recalls 99 260 pounds (about 50 tons) of raw beef products, the US Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) said on Saturday.

This is the second largest product review for Swiss Beef JBS Tolleson for many months. In October, the company recalled 6,5 million pounds of ground beef amid fears of Salmonella contamination. Information about salmonella infection 57 people after eating meat started coming from 16 states.

On November 15, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) noted that the outbreak has now spread to 25 states. At least 246 people were injured, 59 of whom were hospitalized after being infected with salmonellosis.

Salmonella symptoms usually appear after 12-72 hours after eating contaminated food. They can include diarrhea, cramps in the abdomen and a fever that lasts from four to seven days. Most people recover on their own, but those who suffer from persistent diarrhea may need to be hospitalized.

At risk are people with a weakened immune system, children and the elderly.

Products subject to current recall caused by infection E. Coli, can be identified by the package number “EST. 628 ". Products were previously shipped to retail and food service distributors in California, Nevada, Oregon, Utah and Washington.

The US Department of Agriculture notes that there have not yet been confirmed reports of mass infections. E. coli after eating beef.

According to the CDC, Escherichia coli is a collection of bacteria found in "the environment, food and the intestines of people and animals." Although bacteria are usually harmless, some types of them can cause diarrhea, severe infections, including pneumonia and even death, the CDC added.
