Associated Press sues FBI for fake article
The Associated Press went to court because the FBI in 2007 forged a news note of the organization. The AP requires the security agency to disclose how widely this crime investigation method is used and how often agents appear to be journalists.
In 2007, an unknown person threatened to blow up a school near Seattle several times. The FBI agents forged the website of the publication The Seattle Times and published on the fake page a fake note about the threats of explosions, allegedly written by the Associated Press.
An FBI official introduced himself as an AP journalist and sent a link to the suspect to a suspect under the pretext of clarifying details. After opening the letter, the program started on the addressee’s computer and sent the IP address and other data to the agents. As a result, the 15-year-old was detained.
About this operation became known in 2014 year. The Associated Press strongly opposed this practice, although the FBI director insisted on the legitimacy of the methods. The agency requested the FBI to disclose information about other similar operations. The department said that it would take at least two years to collect information. AP tired of waiting, in connection with which the agency went to court. The text of the claim is available here.
