Amtrak launches its first electric bus, and it runs on a popular spectacular route

Amtrak is introducing a whole new way to get around the Pacific Northwest, and it's not a train. The new electric bus will run daily, connecting Seattle with Bellingham, with stops in Everett and Mount Vernon. Travel Leisure.

The Amtrak rail line, in conjunction with the Washington Department of Transportation (WSDOT), recently announced that they are replacing a diesel-powered bus with an electric vehicle that will travel parts of Amtrak's Cascades route.

“At Amtrak, we are committed to providing our passengers with reliable, comfortable and sustainable travel options,” said Cara Oldhauser, Amtrak's chief sustainability officer, in a statement. “By incorporating environmental considerations into our ongoing operations and working with our partners to expand routes, we continue to make Amtrak an even greener mode of transportation.”

The new bus will connect with trains to and from stations south of Seattle.

And no need to worry about stopping to charge. Amtrak and WSDOT claim the bus can go all the way back and forth on a single charge, saving about 10 gallons of diesel fuel and cutting emissions by 000 tons per year.

“WSDOT is pleased to be the first in the nation to offer electric bus service on an intercity route that is part of the national Amtrak network,” added Roger Millar, Washington Secretary of Transportation. “Amtrak Cascades trains already operate with locomotives that meet the highest EPA standards. Amtrak reduced emissions by 86% after replacing older locomotives in 2017. Adding a clean energy bus to our fleet further reinforces our commitment to providing sustainable travel options in the Pacific Northwest.”

Amtrak offers several shuttle buses across the country and is likely to replace them with electric options in the future as the company says it has pledged to be "clean by 2045". This promise will be fulfilled first by improving the energy efficiency of current operations, then by adding renewable fuels and reducing the use of diesel fuel, as in this bus.
