The American band The Killers got into a scandal in Georgia: they invited a Russian to the stage and called him 'brother'

The American alternative rock band The Killers invited a man from the crowd to take the stage as their drummer at their concert in Georgia. The fan turned out to be a citizen of Russia. It nearly ruined the concert, reports CNN.

The group has a tradition: at each concert a drummer from the audience is invited to perform one of the songs. This time among the spectators there was a guy with a poster If destiny is kind I'll be your drummer tonight (“If fate is favorable, I will be your drummer tonight”) - he turned out to be the chosen lucky one.

Vocalist Brandon Flowers brought a fan on stage, after telling the audience: “If this guy is Russian, is it okay for you to have him come up here? I’m fine, let’s go.”

After the invitee announced that he was from Russia, some listeners began to leave the hall, others showed their middle fingers and chanted F*ck Russia. After the song ended, the band's lead singer got into an argument from the stage with one of the patrons, who showed his middle finger: “Are you finished or not? Do you want to come out here? Let's get up. Can't you see your brother in someone else? Is he not your brother? This means we are all separated by borders and countries. Is sharing what you want? So I'm not your brother either? Am I not your brother from America?”

Some of the audience after that continued to be indignant, then Flowers and the rest of the group left the stage.

Videos posted on social media show the crowd booing the musicians and gesticulating.

Later, on the pages of The Killers in social networks, an appeal appeared on behalf of the group with an apology for the incident.

It says that the musicians did not want to offend anyone, and Brandon Flowers' words about "brothers" could be misunderstood. The band said that initially, based on the crowd's reaction, they thought the fan who came on stage was acceptable. The Black Sea Arena, where the performance took place, also apologized.

Later it became known that the management of Radio Tbilisi decided to remove the songs of The Killers from the air, and the Georgian group LOUDspeakers, who performed as an “opening act” for the American band, said that they were “disappointed and angry” and that the musicians should have known where they were going they're going.

Georgia has a long and complicated history of relations with Russia. In 2008, the Russian Federation occupied part of the territories of Georgia. The situation was exacerbated by the invasion of the Russian army into Ukraine last February and the subsequent influx of Russians into Georgia.

The two countries have not had official diplomatic relations since Russia invaded Georgia in 2008. After gaining independence from the Soviet Union in 1991, Georgia teetered between the pro-European sentiments of its citizens and political pressure from Russia.
