Starbucks promotional code leaked to the Internet: the network punished everyone who used it
Some Starbucks app users are posting online complaints after discovering their Starbucks Rewards stars have gone negative. The edition told in more detail Business Insider.
The app usually rewards customers with one or two stars for every dollar spent. They can then be redeemed for free drinks and other Starbucks products. Application stars usually never dip below zero if something goes wrong.
But Starbucks recently stripped those stars from customers it said used a leaked promo code for free drinks on social media. The QR code for 200 Bonus Stars was provided at an in-person event and is for attendees only. But the code was posted on the Reddit forum and was usable before it was disabled.

Customers who used the code posted on Reddit and other social media sites complained and posted photos of their Starbucks apps with negative star balances. One Twitter user joked that he had a "star debt" to Starbucks.

“Yesterday I used a coupon for 200 stars, I had 244 stars, I ordered a drink this morning and now I’m in the red,” one Reddit user wrote. “Starbucks is going to piss off a lot of loyal customers, they're going to screw all these people because they're too stupid to make a QR code for event attendees.”
@Starbucks why are you taking points away from the 200 point deal? having negative stars when it was advertised as a deal is crazy. pic.twitter.com/vJSVKdHHjP

Starbucks has stated that it will not reset accounts.
“On Saturday, April 22, a QR code for bonus stars given to in-person event attendees went viral online and beyond the target audience,” a Starbucks spokesperson said. - Stars used with this code have been removed from inappropriate accounts. We apologize for the inconvenience."

The company ran into a number of technical issues last summer, including widespread phone orders.
In March, the app sent out a test notification to its users, raising concerns about a data breach. The company said no customer information was leaked.
The company's recent update to its rewards program has made it harder to redeem many drinks, such as hot coffee. And when the chain last made major changes to the program in 2019, customers complained, too.
