'A little creepy': houses along Lake Erie in New York covered with a thick layer of ice

Instead of a winter wonderland, residents living along the shores of Lake Erie in New York State woke up in a winter nightmare this weekend to find that their homes were completely covered in a thick layer of ice.

For the past eight years, Ed Mies has lived in his home in Hamburg, New York. And although icing of houses has already happened in this area before, this situation still scares him. "It looks unreal," he told CNN. — It’s dark inside my house. It's a little creepy, a little scary."

His home on South Shore Drive in Hoover Beach, about 15 kilometers south of Buffalo, is covered in a thick layer of ice, with about 400 centimeters of ice in the backyard.

As early as Thursday, February 27, Ed Mees claimed that there was no icing. However, by Friday morning, February 28, his house was completely covered with ice.

Today, houses in Hamburg are reminiscent of ice sculptures or something from the Frozen cartoon.

And while the sight is certainly unusual and even surreal, residents fear it could cause very real damage. “We're worried about the integrity of the homes and the structure when the ice starts to melt,” Meese said.
