In the center of New York in the subway a man was beaten for refusing to give alms
A New York City subway passenger said he was beaten to a bloody pulp by a subway beggar late Saturday night, allegedly because the man refused to give him money in response to a request.
“I just didn’t have any money to give him,” says New York Post Michael Vanslutman, 59, lies in a hospital bed being treated for a broken jaw and eye socket. “He came close to me and I asked him to move away. To which he replied that I was disrespectful.”
Giovanni Nieves, 35, a Brooklyn shelter resident, was arrested the same day and charged with assault. Nieves told reporters as he was led into a police car that he was “sorry” but “doesn’t remember anything that happened” except that he didn’t attack the man for money. “No, it was a misunderstanding,” the criminal said.
Vanslyutman, a metro worker living in the Bronx, rode to his sister in Brooklyn on the No. XXNX train heading south. It was about 2 hours on the evening on Saturday. A beggar approached him and asked for money. Nobody paid attention to him, because there were almost no people in the subway.
When Vanslutman told Nieves that there was no money, he got angry and began to speak Spanish. The man tried to explain that he did not know the language, which infuriated the already aggressive interlocutor: Nieves decided that a man of Latin American appearance was lying to him. He sat down next to the victim and began waving his arms, after which he took an iron bar and began to beat the victim in the face.
Shocked Vanslyutman could not even realize the seriousness of his injuries, until he saw the blood being poured over his shirt. The man will stay in the hospital for a few more days. Nieves is arrested and is awaiting the first trial.
