2-year-old girl died in a hot car parked near a hospital in Oregon

Little Remington from Roseburg, Oregon, which in two months could have turned two years old, died by tragic accident. 38-year-old nurse Nicole Angler forgot her in a hot car in the parking lot near the hospital and went to work. The woman was sure that she had taken her daughter to the nursery.

The mother found the girl at four in the afternoon, after the shift, which began in the morning. The child was in the car seat in the back seat of the car, turned blue and was unconscious, writes New York Post. Engler grabbed the child and hurried back to the hospital, where she had forgotten her daughter in the parking lot. At the medical facility, the child was given cardiopulmonary resuscitation while the ambulance was on its way. Unfortunately, it was not possible to save the girl.

The moment the mother opened the car, the outside temperature was around 80 degrees Fahrenheit (27 Celsius). A report of the National Security Council, previously published this month, reports that at this temperature, the car can heat up from inside to 109 degrees Fahrenheit (almost 43 Celsius) in 20 minutes.

Engler was arrested and imprisoned in Douglas County Prison on suspicion of second degree manslaughter.

Troubled statistics

742 children died in hot cars in the United States between 1998 and 2017, the safety council says. The average age of children is 21 months.

In 54% of cases, the parent or caregiver, without realizing this report, forgot the child in the car. Most often this happened when an adult was especially tired or his schedule changed dramatically.

As a rule, in such cases, parents receive a prison sentence - real or conditional. But in 2014, when a similar case occurred with an engineer from Portland, who forgot his daughter in a car, the authorities decided not to initiate a criminal case against her father. The case was classified as a “tragic and unintended incident”.

On a hot day, a car parked in direct sunlight, may reach temperatures that are dangerous to the childin about an hour. If the car is parked in the shade, then a dangerous temperature level will be established there in about two hours. The researchers explained that the baby is at risk for his life and health at a time when the body due to the large amount of heat loses its ability to regulate body temperature, which leads to organ failure, brain damage and death. This process begins at a temperature in the car of 104 degrees Fahrenheit (40 degrees Celsius).
