The Russian Minister of Culture spoke out against “Asian faces” in cartoons
The head of the Ministry of Culture of Russia, Vladimir Medinsky, expressed concern that modern Russian cartoons are devoid of national color.
“I am concerned that recently - probably for the market this is normal and correct, but for us it is strange - there are cartoons produced by domestic film studios, where there is nothing Russian except Made in Russia [“Made in Russia”],” - Interfax quotes the minister.
According to Medinsky, if these cartoons are voiced in English, then they will be no different from the products of the Chinese studio.
“Even the faces of the children there are Asian, cosmopolitan,” Medinsky said at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum.
The Minister of Culture noted that his department is ready to provide support, including financial support, only to truly Russian cartoons.
“Don’t forget that we are the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation. And if you have films about Johns, Donuts and Mary’s girls, then you will stand at the end of the line,” emphasized Vladimir Medinsky.
Speaking at the forum, Medinsky also promised problems for the dairy product manufacturer Prostokvashino, since royalties for the cartoon images it uses, according to him, do not reach Soyuzmultfilm.
“The Danone company, who produces Prostokvashino, I say hello to him. You will have problems in the near future, I promise, because it’s wrong when it’s not clear to whom, it’s not clear when these royalties [author’s fees] are paid, but the state studio that created these cartoons doesn’t get it,” says the head of the Ministry of Culture.
The Prostokvashino brand occupies the largest market share in terms of sales volumes in tons on the Russian dairy market. However, the Danone company, as reported on its website, received the rights to use the characters from the book “Uncle Fyodor, Cat and Dog” in product packaging design under an agreement with the writer Eduard Uspensky, and not with the Soyuzmultfilm studio.
