Will Smith's wife said that they have not been together for a long time: the couple broke up back in 2016

Jada Pinkett Smith, the wife of actor Will Smith, said that their couple has long separated and since 2016 they have lived “completely separate lives,” reports CNN.

In a clip from her upcoming NBC News special with Hoda Kotb, Pinkett Smith revealed that the couple had previously kept their split private because they "weren't ready yet."

“How do we present this to people? - she said. “We didn’t come up with this.”

Pinkett Smith, 52, and Will Smith, 55, have been married since 1997. Jada stated that they are not officially divorced.

According to her, the press took notice of their marriage after they had already separated. In July 2020, singer August Alsina revealed that he was romantically involved with Jada, which she confirmed during an episode with her husband on "Red Table Talk."

"I found myself in a tough spot with August," Jada said at the time, explaining that she and Will were "going through a really tough time" when it happened.

Slap at the Oscars

During the 2022 Academy Awards, Will Smith stormed the stage and punched host Chris Rock.

Representing nominees for the award in the category “Best Documentary Film”, Chris Rock made an unfortunate joke about the hairstyle of Jada, who suffers from alopecia (pathological hair loss). Smith then went up on stage and slapped the presenter, telling him never to mention his wife's name again.

"Will Smith just beat the crap out of me," a stunned Rock said as Smith returned to his front row seat at Sunday's ceremony. The Rock joked that Pinkett Smith should star in G.I. Jane 2. The Matrix actress suffers from alopecia, which causes hair loss.

In a new interview with People magazine, Pinkett Smith spoke about the incident, which she, like many other people, said she initially thought was a comedy episode between two men.

"I thought, 'This is a parody.' I thought, 'There's no way Will can hit him,'" she recalls. “It wasn’t until Will started walking back to his chair that I realized it wasn’t a parody.”

She told the publication that as soon as they were alone, she asked Smith, “Are you okay?”

Pinkett Smith said during the interview that the marriage ended due to "many reasons."

“I think by 2016 we were both tired of trying,” Jada said. “I think we were both still in our fantasies of what we thought the other person would be like.”

She said she "made a promise" that she and Smith would never have any reason to divorce.

“And I just couldn’t break that promise,” she said.

Pinkett Smith will reveal more about her marriage, career and early life in her memoir, Worthy. The book will be released on October 17.
