The unexpected winner and the fight of Will Smith: how was the Oscar ceremony

The main award (“Best Film”) was awarded to the indie drama “CODA: Child of Deaf Parents.” The leader in the number of statuettes is “Dune” by Denis Villeneuve (6 awards out of 10 nominations). And the leader in the number of nominations, “The Power of the Dog” (Netflix), out of 12 categories, won only one: the award for best director was given to Jane Campion.

Will Smith ("King Richard") finally won his first Oscar, as did Jessica Chastain ("The Eyes of Tammy Faye"). The People's Choice Award went to Zack Snyder's "Army of the Dead" (Netflix), chosen by Twitter users. And the favorite scene was called the episode with the Flash in the "Justice League" by Zack Snyder. Such categories were introduced for the first time. Also for the first time in the history of the Oscars, the winners in eight technical categories were announced before the ceremony, but in the end they received attention during the presentation of awards in other categories.

"CODA: Child of Deaf Parents"

The indie drama that hit Sundance last year was one of the favorites for the Oscars. The film won all three awards in three categories: Best Picture, Best Screenplay and Best Supporting Actor. This is Shan Hader's second feature film, the first being Tallulah, which also premiered at Sundance. Hader spent over a year learning sign language.

Campion had already been nominated for an Oscar for directing the drama The Piano in 1992, when she received a statuette for writing. She became the third woman in the award's history to win a director's award. Previous winners include Chloe Zhao for Nomad Land and Katherine Bigelow for The Hurt Locker.

Jessica Chastain, The Eyes of Tammy Faye

This is Chastain's first award and third acting nomination. In 2012, the actress was nominated for her supporting role in The Help and for her lead role in Target Number One. The Eyes of Tammy Faye is a film about famous American TV preachers Tammy Faye and Jim Baker. From 1976 to 1987, the couple hosted Christian shows and built a powerful money-making empire that eventually collapsed after a series of financial fraud and sex scandals.

The American actor had never received an Oscar before, but was nominated twice - for his roles in the films Ali and The Pursuit of Happyness. Smith played Richard Williams, the father and coach of tennis players Serena and Venus Williams.

Aggressive Will Smith

Introducing the nominees for the Best Documentary category, Chris Rock made an unfortunate joke about the hairdo of Jada Pinkett Smith, Will Smith's wife, who suffers from alopecia (abnormal hair loss). Smith then went up on stage and slapped the host, saying never to mention his wife's name again.

Chris Rock has decided not to file a police report against Will Smith - at least for now, reports Deadline.

Sources confirm that LAPD officers present at the site of the heavily guarded Dolby Theater event spoke to The Rock shortly after the ABC telecast ended. If Rock had filed a complaint with the LAPD, Smith would have been charged with assault. The newly minted Oscar winner could face up to six months behind bars and a fine of up to $100.

In California, simple assault is a misdemeanor. Rock still has six months to apply.

“LAPD investigators are aware of an incident between two individuals during the Academy Awards ceremony,” police said in a statement today. — In the incident, one person hit another. The participant refused to file a police report.”

"Will Smith just beat the crap out of me," a stunned Rock said as Smith returned to his front row seat at Sunday's ceremony. The Rock joked that Pinkett Smith should star in G.I. Jane 2. The Matrix actress suffers from alopecia, which causes hair loss.

While Oscar viewers saw Smith hit The Rock, they didn't hear the latter's reaction as the ABC broadcast "beeped" everything he said.

The audience outside of the stunned Dolby also couldn't hear what Smith replied, but even without lip-reading skills, the words could be made out.

"Keep my wife's name out of your fucking mouth," Smith exclaimed from his seat. Twice.

Although Denzel Washington and Tyler Perry came over to talk to Smith, no one tried to take Smith out of the room. Just minutes later, Smith was back on stage, accepting the much-anticipated Best Actor award.

“I want to apologize to the Academy,” he said tearfully during a lengthy speech. “I want to apologize to all my fellow nominees,” Smith added, joking that he hoped he would be invited back.

“Art imitates life. “I’m like a crazy dad, like they said about Richard Williams... love will make you do crazy things,” he added.

Smith didn't apologize to The Rock, at least not to the cameras. No wonder Smith didn't come backstage at the Oscars to talk to the media, as winners usually do.

Best Foreign Film

"Get behind the wheel of my car" (Japan)

An adaptation of the short story of the same name by Haruki Murakami. According to the plot, the wife of the theater director and actor Yusuke Kafuku dies. To cope with grief, he agrees to stage the play "Uncle Vanya" as part of the theater festival in Hiroshima. While working, he becomes close to his personal driver Misaki, who also experienced the loss of a loved one in the past. In addition to Best Foreign Film, Drive My Car was nominated for Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Film (the first Japanese film presented in this category).
