For the first time in 300 years, there is not a single person on Barbuda Island
Hurricane Irma completely destroyed the island of Barbuda. According to authorities, 95% of infrastructure is damaged, and the entire population of the island (about 1800 people) were evacuated.
“For the first time in 300 years, there is not a single person left on the island of Barbuda - the civilization that existed on this island for more than 300 years has been destroyed,” said Antigua and Barbuda Ambassador to the United States Ronald Sanders.
According to him, Irma was “the most violent hurricane” in the history of the island. The hurricane reached a width of 608 km, while the size of Barbuda 161 square. km
People from the island were evacuated to Antigua.
“We tried to quickly build housing suitable for living. Fortunately, we were expecting a hurricane and ordered supplies of construction materials from Miami in advance,” Sanders said.
Although the authorities tried to create the most acceptable living conditions, Sanders said that many of the victims live in cramped rooms in state institutions and nursing homes.
The ambassador noted that the island has to be built from scratch and financial assistance is needed.
“We are a small island nation and Antigua's gross domestic product is $1 billion a year. We cannot rebuild the island on our own. We hope for help from the international community,” he says.
According to initial estimates, the island needs $ 200 million to recover.
