California authorities almost did not notify residents about the approaching deadly fire
The authorities of the US state of California did not inform many residents about the upcoming forest fire.
Some residents, whose houses were burnt down by the Camp fire, found out about the imminent danger from neighbors knocking on the door from calling friends on a cell phone. Others simply looked through the windows of their homes and saw smoke and flames or heard the cry of the neighbors' children, whose parents, gathering animals, tried to escape from danger.
Matthew White was fast asleep when 8 November fire came to his house in Paradise, California. He heard the sound of a cell phone and the cry of his friend on the other end of the line: “Run! Paradise in the fire! ".
In the early hours of the Camp fire, which turned the city into ashes and became the most deadly in modern California history, only a small number of people living near the fire received warnings or orders to evacuate from local authorities.
The decision to issue warnings and evacuation orders rests with local authorities. 8 November The Butte County Sheriff’s Department decided to use the Code Red system, which informs residents about the danger through a telephone call. Experts called this method obsolete.
As it turned out, this notification is available for those who have subscribed to the service, and then, a small part of them received this time.
The decision not to issue a message like Amber Alert, a federal government system that could cover all the cell phones in the area, was partly due to fear of causing panic and traffic jams on one main road from Paradise, according to Cory Honea, Butte County Sheriff.
Camp has already been recognized as one of the deadliest fires in US history. Only two fires in the past led to more casualties: the Great 1910 fire of the year (87 dead) and the Minnesota fire of the 1918 year, which killed 450 people.
The list of missing persons after a massive fire in Northern California was reduced to 870 people.
