Electric vehicles are recalled in the USA due to the threat of fire: there have already been fires

General Motors (GM) said it is expanding its recent recall of Chevrolet Bolt EVs to newer EV models due to potential fire hazards. Writes about it CNBC.

Expanding the recall is expected to cost the automaker an additional $ 1 billion, bringing the total cost of replacing potentially defective battery modules in vehicles to $ 1,8 billion.

GM said some 73 vehicles in the US and Canada will be added to the 000-2019 model recall, including a recently released larger version of the vehicle called the Bolt EUV. The first recall involved approximately 2022 vehicles worldwide from 69-000 models, including nearly 2017 vehicles in the United States.

Extended recall now includes all Bolt EV models ever produced. This cast a shadow over GM's first mainstream electric vehicle. It also adds billions of dollars in problems for new electric vehicles, as President Joe Biden's administration decides that 2030% of all new cars sold will be EVs by 50.

The company's shares settled at $ 48,80, down less than 1%.

GM said it is honoring cost recovery obligations from electric vehicle battery supplier LG Energy Solution, which produced defective parts at factories in South Korea and Michigan. US plant parts are not included in the recall.

The automaker plans to replace expensive vehicle battery modules. GM also said it is working with LG to troubleshoot the problem and increase production of new modules.

“Our focus on safety and doing right by our customers guides every decision we make across the company,” said Doug Parks, GM executive vice president. “As leaders in the transition to an all-electric future, we know that building and maintaining trust is critical. GM customers can be confident in our commitment to taking steps to ensure the safety of these vehicles."

The expansion comes as the companies discovered that batteries for these vehicles can have two manufacturing defects - a torn anode tab and a folded separator - present in the same battery cell, increasing the risk of fire.

GM has confirmed one fire among recalled vehicles. This is in addition to at least nine previously confirmed fires.

GM also said it will notify customers when parts are ready.

In the meantime, GM is asking affected Bolt EV owners to set their vehicles to a 90% charge limit using Hilltop Reserve mode (for 2017-2018 model years) or Target Charge Level mode (for model year 2019).

GM is also asking owners not to drain the battery below approximately 70 miles of remaining range and, as it advised last week, not to park their cars inside and charge them unattended overnight "out of excessive caution."
