Russia has banned throwing cigarette butts out of the windows of cars and trains

Prime Minister of Russia Dmitry Medvedev signed decree on amending the Rules of the fire regime in the Russian Federation, prohibiting throwing cigarette butts out of the windows of cars and trains.

This is stated on the official website government of the country.

The document prohibits throwing away “hot slag, coal and ash, as well as burning cigarette butts and matches during the movement of railway rolling stock and motor vehicles” in right of way and security zones of roads, as well as on sections of railway tracks and highways.

The rights-of-way and security zones of railways (including mothballed ones) must be cleared “of dead wood, logging residues and bushes.” Also, there should be no wooden sleepers or other combustible waste in these areas.

Also, within the boundaries of rights-of-way and roadside strips of highways and in the security zones of railways, overpasses and product pipelines, it is prohibited to burn dry grass, make fires, burn brushwood and felled trees and shrubs, as well as “leaving dead trees and shrubs.”

Owners of land plots - owners, landowners or tenants - are required to carry out “regular garbage collection and grass mowing,” while the time period in which one cleaning must be carried out is not specified.

In addition, agricultural workers involved in harvesting were prohibited from smoking outside specially equipped places, as well as from working with open fire “in grain tracts and near them.”

It is also prohibited to stockpile hay, straw and firewood at a distance of less than 50 meters from bridges, overpasses, track structures and paths of organized train traffic, as well as forest plantations; at a distance of less than 15 meters from the axis of the communication lines; within the security zones of overhead power lines.
