In Los Angeles, built a building that can withstand any earthquake

In Los Angeles, the office center (W) Rapper Tower was built. The level of its seismic resistance is five times higher than the norm, according to League.

American architect Eric Owen Moss worked on the (W)rapper project for two decades. The building has a height of 72 meters.

The exterior of the building consists of glass and steel support structures extending from I-beams in internal plates through the façade to insulators below ground level.

The exterior structure is finished with gray refractory cement plaster.

Due to its design, the building has a level of earthquake resistance that is five times higher than the standards.

“This is perhaps the safest building, and its life cycle, in our opinion, is eternal. If there’s an earthquake on Wednesday, you can safely go back to the office and work on Thursday,” Moss said. According to the architect, this is not a building that will have to be remodeled or rebuilt.

Building logic

The materials used in the construction, such as steel, have a significant carbon footprint. However, according to the architect, the longevity of the building will eventually make up for it.

In addition, open floor plans due to the absence of columns in the interior were designed to allow for design flexibility.

Moss believes that conceptual architecture like (W)rapper can “encourage this kind of professional entrepreneurial detachment.”

“So there is spatial variability both in terms of potential leasing and in terms of the concept of the structure,” Moss added.

“It’s a conceptual tension between the possibility of disorder and the promise of order,” Moss says. He sees the building—like much of his work here—as a stark contrast to the glassy, ​​orderly blocks that house most offices.

Also, from the building you can immediately get to the metro station - through the parking lot on the underground floor.

The building is located across from the Hayden Tract Aqueduct in Culver City, a post-industrial neighborhood with many sculptural buildings created by Moss Studio along with developers Frederic and Laurie Samitaur Smith since the early 1990s.

The (W)rapper Tower is the first of three towers planned on a piece of land in Los Angeles proper, and the architect said there are plans to build a footbridge between the lot and the Hayden tract. The combined project was called The New City.

Two additional towers on the site have been approved by the Los Angeles City Council, with a construction timeline yet to be determined.
