Urine sensors to be installed in elevators in Boston

The Massachusetts Transportation Authority (MBTA) is launching a test program to stop people peeing in elevators. Special urine sensors will be installed there. The edition told in more detail APNews.

MBTA is launching a pilot program that will place urine detection sensors in four elevators in downtown Boston. Sensors will alert employees who will have to send a cleaning team there.

MBTA program manager Megan Collins said sensors on the elevator's ceiling have an attached fan that allows them to suck in air and "detect what's in it."

The program starts in August. The data will be collected for several months before the department decides on the implementation of the program before the end of the year.

This is not a new concept.

Nearly a decade ago, the Atlanta Department of Transportation launched a pilot program that included strobe lights, alarms, and police alerts when urine was found in an elevator. Elevators after that did not work until cleaning. This program, considered a success, was eventually expanded.

The MBTA hopes the program will help solve the problem, as Collins says public urination is not only unsanitary, but can also damage elevators.
