In California, because of the heat appeared dangerous snakes
The lack of rain and hot days contribute to the fact that California residents have become more likely to meet with rattlesnakes.
“During a heat wave, like this Monday, which reached 43 degrees, snakes often hide in the shade or other cool place during the day,” said Adrianna John, assistant curator of animal programs.
“Rock cracks are one of the best places to look for rattlesnakes. That's where they seek refuge when the temperature rises to 43 degrees,” John said.
Meeting with a rattlesnake usually becomes a surprise, both for people and for snakes. That is why you need to be careful when working in areas where snakes can hide.
As a rule, snakes are active in the morning, in the evening and at night, when it is cool. During the day, snakes look for cold in the shade, as their body temperature depends on the ambient temperature.
Abundant rainfall last winter and spring provided the snake with an abundance of food and shelter, so the conditions for snake life are more favorable this year.
In California, 300 snake bites are reported annually, according to the California Poison Control System. John said that people could avoid snake bites.
“If you see a snake, leave it alone, give it plenty of space and don't try to touch it. Snakes prefer to avoid people rather than bite them,” she added. “They don't want to use their venom to hurt you. They want to use their poison to kill their food."
Often people suffer when they try to catch her. Some people bite when they are drunk. Just do not walk to the rocky cracks, under the bushes or where you can not see and there is a shadow. Use a stick or other object to check the location for snakes.
Avoid hiking in the wild at night during the summer, because at this time of the day the snakes are more active and difficult to grasp. Do not go hiking alone and wear durable boots and long loose pants, not shorts and flip-flops. Teach children to avoid snakes and lead a dog on a leash while traveling around the land of snakes.
Here's how to save your home from a rattlesnake snake:
- Install a fence with a grid of no more than 6 mm and a height of at least a meter. The fence should also be deflected outwards by about 30 degrees.
- Cut down the weeds and remove the boards and other unnecessary material around the yard where snakes can hide.
- Encourage and protect natural competitors of rattlesnakes, such as: common pine snake, whip serpent and royal that kill rattlesnakes.
If you are bitten, try to stay calm and receive medical assistance as soon as possible. Remove watches, rings and other jewelry that may cause constriction during edema and swelling. Wildlife experts prohibit the imposition of tourniquet, use vinegar with ice, cut the wound and suck out the poison and drink alcohol.
