US airports tightened hand baggage inspection rules
Federal security officers at some airports in the United States began to inspect books and food from hand luggage traveling. People complain that in this way customs officers invade their privacy, writes The miami herald.
The U.S. Transportation Security Administration said it is testing a new screening system at some airports because carry-on bags have become too full of items lately—and baggage X-ray machines can't always see everything inside. Security officials said that books and magazines can sometimes resemble explosive devices when being screened through an X-ray machine.
As the representative of the transport security department, Carrie Harmon, said, security officers can inspect the books and magazines separately to make sure that nothing forbidden is hidden in them. He assured that security officers do not check what travelers read.
University of California professor Davis Julie Se encountered a new procedure at Sacramento International Airport. According to her, airport security officers asked people to put foodstuffs, books and magazines from hand luggage and put them in a separate box before sending them by conveyor belt to an x-ray scanner. Se noted that she was unhappy that security staff violated the privacy of travelers.
The new screening system is being tested at Los Angeles, Boise, Colorado Springs, Detroit, Fort Lauderdale, Boston Logan, Lubbock, Munoz Marin airports in Puerto Rico, Las Vegas McCarran and Phoenix Sky Harbor.
