Tropical cyclone brings heavy rains to Florida
Tropical storm Gordon formed around the Upper Keys. There is a risk of wind gusts on land over 50 miles per hour (80 km / h) and heavy precipitation.
Tropical storm warnings were issued in South Florida for Miami-Dade County, Keys and on the west coast to Bonita Beach, where wind speeds are over 40 miles per hour (64 km / h). Gusty winds are still possible in Broward County.
Flood warnings issued in South Florida due to heavy rain and gusting winds in the ocean during the day. According to the forecast, it is expected from 2 to 4 inches (5-10 cm) of precipitation, in some places to 8 inches (20,32 cm)
In some places, wind gusts from the ocean reach 40-50 miles per hour (64-80 km / h). This is enough to tear the branches from the trees and cause interruptions in the supply of electricity.
Zoo representative Miami Ron Magill said that the zoo is closed on Labor Day.
In addition, tropical storm warnings are already in effect for the Alabama and Mississippi coastlines, and southeastern Louisiana is expected, including the New Orleans area, to have steady winds over 40 miles per hour (64 km / h).
The peak intensity of the storm, when it reaches the northern coast of the Gulf of Mexico, is still unknown.
It is currently expected that Gordon will become a strong tropical storm with winds around 60 miles per hour (95,5 km / hour) when it comes ashore anywhere from southeastern Louisiana to Alabama late Tuesday evening or early Wednesday morning. However, he can reach the strength of a hurricane.
It is worth noting that tropical storm Florence, on the other side of the Atlantic, continues to move in the direction of the East Coast. It took more than a week. It is too early to say whether he is threatening the United States, but even if this happens, it is unlikely that he will somehow affect South Florida.
If it weakens by the end of this week, it will most likely come closer to the United States over time. If it remains strong, it will most likely turn north into the open ocean.
