Transgender people allowed to serve in the US Army

After the cancellation of the “don't ask - don't say” rule, which allowed members of sexual minorities to serve in the army, provided they hid their sexual orientation, the Obama administration took a new step. US Secretary of Defense Ashton Carter announced that transgender people can also openly serve in the military.

“Despite the fact that there are no exact data on the number of transgender people in the armed forces, on the basis of existing research, RAND Corporation concluded that we are talking about approximately 2500 people from about one million three hundred thousand military in active service, and about 1500 people from 825000 reservists, ”explained Carter. “According to other estimates, about 7000 transgender people are on fixed-term duty, and about 4000 are in reserve.”

According to the minister, despite the fact that the number of transgender military is relatively small, we are talking about talented and trained Americans, with honor serving the country.

“We invest hundreds of thousands of dollars in the training and development of each person, and we want to be able to save people, in the development of the talent of which we have invested,” said Ashton Carter.

In the summer of 2015, the Pentagon began work on lifting the ban on sexual minorities in the US Army.

Earlier, transgender people appealed to the Pentagon with a request to allow them to serve in the army without hiding their sex. They also talked about discrimination compared to other members of the LGBT community who were allowed to serve in the army openly in 2011.
