The Economist: politics in Ukraine has become like a satire

One morning, a Kiev history teacher wakes up and finds out that he has been elected president of Ukraine. This happened thanks to a video that his student secretly recorded and uploaded to YouTube. In the video, the teacher criticizes Ukrainian politicians for their lies and people for their indifference.

“Our politicians don’t know history, but they are brilliant mathematicians: they all know how to add, divide and multiply their wealth,” he tells a colleague. The video went viral, and the local oligarch, who holds the position of prime minister, supported the teacher's candidacy in the elections in the hope of getting a puppet. Instead, the new president sends the oligarch to prison and begins working to restore the state with his friends.

This is the plot of “Servant of the People,” a satirical television show that aired in Ukraine in 2015. Since then, 20 million people - half the population of Ukraine - have watched it. Ironically, the show is shown on a channel owned by oligarch Igor Kolomoisky. Less funny is that the comedian who plays the teacher, Vladimir Zelensky, according to some polls, ranks second in the ranking of possible candidates for the presidency of Ukraine, ahead of only the veteran populist Yulia Tymoshenko. Petro Poroshenko, who currently holds the position of President of Ukraine, has the support of only 5% of the population. The elections will take place in March 2019, but preparations for them are already in full swing.

Ukrainian politics has long resembled the “operetta”, as described by its Russian writer of Ukrainian origin Mikhail Bulgakov in his work. "White Guard", which refers to the short period of the establishment of independence of Ukraine in 1918 year. A century later, Ukraine is still trying to assert its sovereignty, faced with Russian aggression and corruption.

“The state is not fulfilling its basic functions of ensuring security and justice,” said former Ukrainian Defense Minister Anatoly Gritsenko, who announced his presidential candidacy in an unusual way, without the support of oligarchs.

At the same time, Gritsenko stressed that in order for Ukraine to be perceived as a sovereign state, a country must behave accordingly.

“We cannot blame Putin for corruption within the country, lies and lack of reform,” he said.
