In Syria, a plane with 15 Russian military was shot down: Russia blamed Israel

Off the coast of Syria, a Russian military aircraft Il-20 was shot down with 15 military on board. This happened on September 17 near 23: 00 Moscow time (15: 00 Eastern time).

Despite the fact that the aircraft was shot down by the Syrians, Russia placed the blame for what happened on Israel. Details of the situation described the publication "Jellyfish".

Initially, the plane crash was not reported - the Russian Defense Ministry said only that he disappeared from radar during an Israeli aircraft attack on the Syrian city of Lattakia, as well as launching missiles from the French frigate Auvergne in the Mediterranean Sea.
IL-20 could accidentally shoot down Syrian air defenses, a CNN source in the US government said. According to him, this could happen when the Syrian military attempted to repel rocket attacks from Israel.

The press service of the Israel Defense Forces declined to comment on the IL-20 incident.
The Russian Defense Ministry 18 September confirmed that the Syrians shot down the plane - and blamed Israel. The Defense Ministry said that Israel had warned Russia about the air raid on Latakia just a minute before it began, which did not allow the IL-20 to be withdrawn to a safe zone. In addition, according to the Ministry of Defense, during the attack, the Israeli pilots "set up an IL-20 under the fire of Syrian air defense."

Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu spoke on the phone with the head of the Israeli military department Agvidor Lieberman. Shoigu noted that the Russian Ministry of Defense has repeatedly called on Israel not to strike at Syria, threatening the Russians. He also warned that Russia reserves the right to take further retaliatory steps. The Israeli Defense Ministry refused to comment on the content of the conversation Lieberman and Shoigu.

As a result of the crash of IL-20, 15 of Russian servicemen were killed. 18 September wreckage of the aircraft were found in the sea in the Syrian province of Latakia. On board the Russian ships that are involved in the search operation, they lifted fragments of the crew’s bodies and personal belongings of the victims. Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed his condolences in connection with the plane crash.
