States allowed to use genetically modified salmon
The US Food and Drug Administration has authorized the use of genetically modified Atlantic salmon.
The controversy over how safe it is to eat a genetically modified fish lasted for several years.
In particular, critics note that the research done is not enough to prove the complete safety of the product.
The regulator's conclusion states that food products made from genetically modified salmon are "safe and nutritious" in the same way as products made from conventional fish. According to the agency, there is virtually no difference in the taste of modified salmon and regular Atlantic salmon.
Gena-modified salmon in the United States is manufactured by AquaBounty Technologies from Massachusetts. However, the company grows fish in two of its enterprises - in Canada and Panama. As the regulator emphasizes, permission to eat genetically modified salmon does not mean that companies will be allowed to breed and grow fish in the United States.
