Senator from California forbidden to hug at work because of complaints from colleagues
A California state senator was asked to stop hugging people after several of his female colleagues reported feeling uncomfortable. However, an investigation released Thursday found that Sen. Bob Hertzberg's frequent hugs were not sexually suggestive and were most often not unwanted.
Herzberg, a democrat from Los Angeles because of his cuddle habit got nicknames "Hugsberg and Huggy Bear". The Senate Committee officially asked him not to hug people anymore, writes CNBS.
Herzberg published a letter in which he apologized to anyone who was uncomfortable with his arms. The 63-year-old politician said that he had greeted people all his life with hugs that were “a gesture of warmth and kindness.
Three California lawmakers resigned because of allegations of apparent sexual misconduct.
Herzberg’s investigation began after complaints from three female legislators and a male sergeant in 2010. They claimed that they felt embarrassed while they were hugging the senator.
However, investigators found that after one of the prosecutors told Herzberg about the awkward state of health during the embrace, he stopped doing it.
Herzberg said the charges against him were used by opponents, as he proposed to revise the California pledge system for criminals awaiting trial.
Herzberg was elected to the State Senate in 2014 after 6 years in the Assembly.
