The family of an American arrested in Russia appealed to the UN for help

The family of Wall Street Journal correspondent Evan Gershkowitz, who was arrested in Russia on espionage charges, has asked the United Nations (UN) for help in freeing him. He writes about it Meduza.

Gershkovich's relatives submitted a petition to the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention.

The journalist's father, Mikhail Gershkovich, told reporters that the petition emphasizes that Evan's detention is a violation of human rights.

“This statement explains that Evan's detention is a violation of human rights and that Russia must release him immediately. We just want him to come home,” said the journalist’s father, Mikhail Gershkovich.

The United States Ambassador to the United Nations, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, stressed that "no family should have to watch a loved one being used as a political pawn."

“This is exactly what President Putin is doing. Russia's actions go beyond cruelty. And they are a violation of international law,” she added.

В at the end of March 2023, Evan Gershkovich was detained in Yekaterinburg on charges of espionage, according to Article 276 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation. Since the beginning of April, he has been in custody in the Lefortovo pre-trial detention center. The arrest of the journalist was extended until November 30 by the Lefortovo District Court of Moscow.

According to the Federal Security Service (FSB), Gershkovich allegedly collected secret data about an enterprise in the Russian military-industrial sphere at the request of the American side.

In turn, Gershkovich denies all charges. Before his arrest in Yekaterinburg, he visited Nizhny Tagil, where Uralvagonzavod is located.

In parallel with the arrest of Gershkovich, a married couple from Nizhny Tagil, employees of Uralvagonzavod, were also detained. In April, PR specialist Yaroslav Shirshikov, who was the first to report Gershkovich’s arrest, was also arrested. In June, Shirshikov was released from pre-trial detention center.
