Jewish Federations of North America call for writing letters to American journalist in Russian prison

Jewish Federations of North America (JFNA) have initiated a public campaign - they are calling for letters of congratulations on the upcoming Jewish New Year to be sent to Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich, who was arrested in Russia. The messages, prayers and wishes received will be compiled into a collective letter that will be sent to Evan through his lawyers to show support for the Jewish community.

All letters will be given to the journalist's family in the hope that Evan himself will be released soon and will be able to read them.

31-year-old Evan Gershkovich was detained by Russian authorities on March 29, 2023, and has been held in Lefortovo prison since then.

“The desire for freedom has always played a central role in Jewish tradition and prayer, illustrating how highly we value the sanctity of life and the health of those in danger,” said the President and CEO Jewish Federation of North America Eric Fingerhut. “We are deeply concerned for Evan’s well-being.” Let him know that we, gathering with our loved ones at the festive table on Rosh Hashanah, are thinking about him and stand in solidarity with him.”

Letters can be sent until 18:00 pm EST on Friday, September 15, 2023 using this reference.
