Starting from 1 in January in New York will be more difficult to buy cigarettes
New Yorkers will no longer be able to buy cigarettes at a local pharmacy.
A law prohibiting pharmacies from selling cigarettes and other tobacco products should come into force on January 1 2019.
Mayor de Blasio signed a bill that also prohibits pharmacies from selling e-cigarettes back in the 2017 year.
“People trust pharmacies to help them stay healthy—they should be helping smokers quit, not the other way around,” said Deputy Mayor for Health and Human Services Dr. Herminia Palacio.
Health officials said that tobacco use, which provokes stroke, diabetes, heart disease, lung and several types of cancer, causes death in about 12 000 people per year in New York. According to official figures, more than 860 000 adults and 13 000 young people smoke in the city.
Many pharmacies voluntarily stopped selling tobacco products, including a large network of CVS, which made a similar decision in 2014, but, according to the city, about 500 pharmacies still sell tobacco products.
The ban has become part of a package of anti-smoking bills, among which was the increase in cigarette prices to 13 dollars per pack.
An active anti-smoking campaign in New York began in 2002 with the adoption of a law that prohibited smoking in bars, restaurants, offices and many other public places. In 2011, this ban was extended to parks and beaches.
