Russia upgraded bunker for storing nuclear weapons in the Baltic States
According to the pictures from space, Russia has significantly modernized a bunker for storing nuclear weapons in Kaliningrad, a sensitive exclave of Russian territory, sandwiched between Poland and the Baltic countries.
This is evidenced by satellite images published Federation of American Scientists (FAS).
According to the organization, restoration work began at the facility in the middle of 2016. During this period, one of the three underground bunkers was excavated and deepened, and recently it was again blocked.
“Presumably to return to operational status in the near future,” FAS experts noted.
At the same time, no work was done on the object from 2002 to 2010 year.
According to Hans Christensen, director of a nuclear information project in the Federation, it is not clear from the images whether the facility contained nuclear weapons and whether there will be any future weapons there.
“The characteristics of this site suggest that it could potentially serve the Russian Air Force or Navy. But it could also be a facility that could potentially support nuclear warheads for the air force, navy, army, air defense and coastal defense forces in the region,” Christensen said.
“As far as I know, this is the only nuclear weapons storage facility in the Kaliningrad region,” he concluded.
Kaliningrad is an isolated Russian territory on the Baltic Sea coast that will host several soccer matches during the 2018 FIFA World Cup.
The Kremlin has not yet commented on reports of any modernization in Kaliningrad, but has previously actively defended its right to place weapons there.
Russia claims that nuclear warheads are stored in a “central” repository, which is believed to be located in mainland Russia.
Christensen admits that the facility in Kaliningrad "can potentially function as a platform for the conditional storage of nuclear weapons, which will be supplied with warheads from central warehouses in the event of a crisis."
Tensions in Eastern Europe are mounting after Russia's annexation of the Crimea in 2014.
In February, US and European officials expressed concern over the militarization of Russia in the Baltic States after the Kremlin launched new Iskander missiles in Kaliningrad.
The official reaction of Russia to information about the modernization of the bunker has not yet been.
