Revolutionary feature: the new BMW can be controlled by the eyes
Already from the eighth generation, the BMW 5 Series offers a revolutionary new feature. It allows drivers to change lanes simply by looking in the side mirrors. How everything will happen, said the publication Entrepreneur.
With Active Lane Change Assist, an optional part of the Highway Assistant Level 2 driver assistance package, your vehicle can automatically change lanes for you.
How it works
The system will first inform you that you need to change lanes. This may be because you are approaching a slower vehicle or your lane is ending.

With Active Lane Change Assist, the driver simply looks in the side mirror and the car changes lanes if it is safe to do so.
Other vehicles, such as the GM SuperCruise system, have an automatic lane change option, but they require you to physically accept the prompt using the turn signal switch. BMW takes this step outside of the process of letting your eyes drive the car.
Some Concerns
Not everyone is a fan of this new feature. MotorTrend, for example, questioned the safety of eye steering.
“We'd be lying if we weren't a little concerned,” Automotive Magazine wrote. “The reality is that moving your hand a few inches and touching a lever is easy, and the machine is much less likely to misinterpret the action. We will need to try this system as soon as the machine is available.”
