Permanent Representative of the United States in the UN will be the ex-TV presenter

A US State Department Spokesperson and former journalist Heather Nauert will be appointed US ambassador to the UN. This was reported by several US media, citing sources familiar with the situation.

Announcing the nomination of Nauert President of the United States on Friday 7 December, told Reuters and the newspaper The Hill, quoting interlocutors who know about this decision.

The first that Trump nominates the representative of the State Department for the post of ambassador to the UN, wrote Bloomberg, then the information was confirmed by the Washington Post and Fox News.

Nauert's possible nomination for the post of US ambassador to the UN was reported back in November by the Wall Street Journal, as well as Fox News and ABC - Nauert worked on these television channels before she found herself in government service. Neither she herself nor Trump confirmed this information at the time, but Trump said that Nauert’s candidacy was “seriously being considered.” “She’s great, she’s been with us [in the US presidential administration] for a long time, she’s actually supported us for a very long time,” the president told reporters at the time.

On Thursday evening, neither Trump himself, nor the White House press service have reported on the upcoming advancement of Nauert. The State Department and Nauert personally could not comment on the information promptly.

After her nomination for the post of permanent representative to the UN, the candidacy will have to be approved by the US Senate - however, there the Republicans, following the results of the midterm elections on November 6, managed to maintain and even strengthen their majority.

From presenter to undersecretary of state

Nauert 48 years, she came to the Trump administration only in April 2017 as head of the State Department press service. She began working in the US Department of State when she was in charge of Rex Tillerson. She never managed to improve relations with him, but she retained her position after Tillerson was replaced by Mike Pompeo.

Under him, Nauert’s career took off - she accompanied the Secretary of State on foreign trips, entered his inner circle, and Pompeo later promoted her to his deputy for public diplomacy and public relations.

At the same time, up to the State Department, Naurth did not work in television and did not occupy high positions in the civil service.

Nauert began her journalism career in 1996, joined the conservative Fox News channel in 1998, and then was a presenter on ABC from 2005 to 2007. After that, she returned to Fox, where she hosted the program “Fox and friends.” Trump admitted that he watches it regularly and praised the channel on Twitter.

Bloomberg notes that Nauert's candidacy is an unexpected choice, since the former TV presenter has very little experience in the civil service or diplomatic work.

Nauert is on good terms with Trump’s daughter Ivanka, who was also tipped for the post of US ambassador to the UN, and her husband Jared Kushner, both of whom now work as advisers to the president.

The current US Ambassador to the UN, Nikki Haley, has served in this position since January 2017. She also had no experience in foreign policy - Haley served as governor of South Carolina. In October 2018, she announced that she would retire before the end of the year. Trump thanked her for her "fantastic job."

She did not name the reasons for which she leaves the post, but hurried to dispel rumors that she was allegedly preparing to run for the 2020 presidential election of the year.
