American Airlines flight pilots confuse Florida airports

The pilots of the flight of American Airlines, departing from Philadelphia, almost put the plane in the wrong airport in Florida. According to the Federal Aviation Administration, the 862 flight departed from Philadelphia International Airport on Tuesday, heading for Fort Myers. And already in the sky something went wrong.

On entering the Southwest Florida International Airport, located in Fort Myers, the pilots suddenly made a U-turn to the side of Page Field, another general aviation airport, which is seven miles away (more than 11 km) to the side, writes 6abc.com.

According to the Federal Aviation Administration, air traffic controllers quickly redirected the flight back to the required airport. According to official data, the Airbus A320 airliner with 137 passengers and five crew members on board landed at the destination point safely and without incident.

Both the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board are investigating this incident.

Page Field is a general aviation airport that formerly served as the region's commercial airport until the 1983 opening of Southwest Florida International, Southwest Florida International Airport.

A local pilot reviewing the flight told reporters the plane dropped to about 800 feet (250 meters) on approach to Page Field before climbing back up to 1500 feet (450 meters) and "zigzagging to the correct airport."

In addition to the general danger of the situation in the sky, the landing itself would be risky: the length of the runway at Page Field is 6400 feet (2 kilometers), and at Southwest Florida Airport it is 12 thousand feet (3,6 kilometers).

Driving outside the strip may be fraught with serious accidents, as it happened, for example, the other day in Sochi: the plane rolled out of the lane and caught fire. As a result of the accident, 18 people were injured.
