Pentagon assures US will respond to any threat to Russia

Washington still has the capacity to respond, regardless of what nuclear weapons Moscow has at its disposal. This was stated by the head of the Strategic Command of the US Armed Forces, General John Heithen, during the budget hearings in the House Committee on Armed Forces, writes Voice of America.

“We are ready for all the threats that exist, and no one should doubt this,” said Heiten.

“They cannot do anything except a massive attack against our country, to which we could not respond,” he added. “By the way, they do not know where our submarines are located, and they are capable of destroying their country if we follow this path.”

In turn, US Deputy Secretary of Defense for Political Affairs, John Rood, said that Putin’s statements "did not come as a surprise, but they were disappointing."

“We are concerned about some of the provisions of the doctrine that come from Russia, talking about early escalation, strengthening the role of nuclear weapons in the conflict,” Rud said.

He also rejected Moscow’s claims that it was developing new nuclear weapons in connection with Washington’s refusal to comply with previous arms control agreements.

“The United States remains committed to our arms control commitments,” the deputy minister said. “Unfortunately, the previous practice of the Russian Federation regarding its compliance with its obligations in the field of arms control leaves much to be desired.”

The White House also noted that as part of the 700 billion-dollar defense budget, the US military is actively working to modernize its own nuclear arsenal and missile defense systems.

Officials in Washington also refer to the draft budget for the 2019 year, which involves the allocation of another 24 billions of dollars to support and modernize the country's nuclear forces.

Recall earlier President of Russia Vladimir Putin spoke about new types of Russian nuclear weapons, including a nuclear-powered cruise missile, laser weapons, an unmanned submarine with a nuclear power plant and a new hypersonic missile.

At one of the presentations, there was a video sequence where the situation is modeled like a Russian rocket hits the shores of florida. At the same time, the Russian leader stressed that new types of weapons make American missile defense systems useless.
