Passengers who overpaid for the air ticket during a hurricane are entitled to compensation.

Joanna Cardwell will receive a partial refund after she has overpaid over $ 1600 for airfare to fly away from hurricane Irma with her elderly mother and son.

She was one of thousands of passengers who were trying to find flights from Florida Key, as Hurricane Irma was heading south for Florida. She had to pick up her elderly mother, so she paid about $ 700 to change the route and pick up her mother. She paid another $ 900 for two one-way tickets for her and her son.

Two days after they bought tickets, American and other airlines changed their ticket prices.

George Hobby from Airfare watchdog does not consider that the price change was made for profit.

“I really think the airlines are not stupid enough to speculate on a disaster,” Hobika said. “I think those price jumps were actually computers.” They are programmed to sell the last seat on the plane at higher rates than the one 21 days earlier.”

Representative American Airlines stated: "If passengers booked a September 5 / 6 ticket before we changed fares, they can contact our team and request a refund of the difference."

Joanna hopes to be able to get more than $ 1000 from those she spent.

The same applies to other airlines that are at the last moment lowered air ticket prices so that as many people as possible take out of the hurricane zone.
