A man almost died from an infection that got infected because he gnawed his nails.
28-year-old Luke Hanman from the UK became infected with sepsis due to biting his nails and, according to doctors, he miraculously managed to avoid death.
Hanoman began to experience traditional flu symptoms, including increased sweating and fever, writes Fox News.
At first, he tried to ignore them, but soon his finger, the part of the skin on which he bit off before the onset of symptoms, was severely swollen, and the guy began to feel the pulsating pain.
He eventually went to a nearby hospital, where doctors said he was “lucky to still be alive.” Hanoman was treated for sepsis for several days. By this time, he had a high fever and red spots all over his body - a sign that the infection was spreading.
“They told me I was lucky to be alive this long, I was close to septic shock,” Hanoman said.
The man admitted that he regularly bites his nails, calling it a “nervous habit.”
Sepsis is a potentially life-threatening infection that can cause serious complications, which in turn can cause the failure of some internal organs.
In the US, more than 1,5 million people annually become infected with this disease, of which about 250 000 people die.
Anyone can become infected with sepsis, but this infection is more common in people with weakened immune systems. The sooner to take up her treatment, the better. It is generally treatable with conventional antibiotics.
