Infant in Canada first recorded without gender
An eight-month-old baby in Canada was issued a medical record giving access to free medical care, which does not indicate the sex of the child. As far as is known, this is the first such case in the world.
The parent of the child, Cory Doty, identifies himself as a non-binary transgender, that is, does not consider himself to be either a woman or a man. Corey Doty wants the child to choose her gender identity when she grows up.
On the child’s medical card, in the “gender” column, only the Latin letter U is written, which can mean either “undetermined” or “unassigned”.
Cory Doty also wants the authorities to ensure that the baby’s gender is not indicated on the birth certificate.
The child, named Cyril Utley, was born in November 2016, at the home of Cory Doty's friends in British Columbia. Thus, officials had no opportunity to witness the sex of a newborn.
Corey Doty carefully avoids masculine and feminine pronouns, preferring to use the word “they” in all cases, and argues that visual examination of a child after birth does not allow one to determine which gender he will associate himself with in the future.
“I raise them so that when they become self-aware and can express themselves, they will tell me who they are. I understand that this is a baby, and I completely love and raise them beyond the concepts of “boy” or “girl,” Cory Doty tells Canada's CBC television channel.
“After I was born, doctors looked at my genitals and based on that they made a guess as to who I would be. And these assumptions have haunted me all my life,” Doty says. “Those assumptions turned out to be wrong, and I had to change a lot in my life.”
Canadian authorities refuse to issue a birth certificate to Cyril Utley without specifying a specific gender, and Corey Doty tries to challenge their actions in court.
Family lawyer Barbara Findlay (Barbara Findley), insisting that her name be written in lower case letters, said in an interview Global News: “In this culture, the sex of the baby is determined by a doctor who lifts the baby’s legs and examines the genitals. But we know that gender identity does not develop until several years after birth.”
