Because of the salt that is sprinkled on the streets, two explosions occurred in the center of Manhattan.
On the morning of March 2, two hatches exploded in Upper East Side in Manhattan, causing their 45-kilogram covers to fly into the air, landing on the roadway.
One of the hatches was near the course in a Thai restaurant Thep on East 75th Street and Second Avenue, the second one is right across the road, on 76th Street, writes Daily Mail.
At least two people witnessed explosions that occurred at intervals of 15-20 minutes, and tried to close themselves from the thick smoke with their umbrellas.
Rescuers came to the conclusion that the cause of the explosions was the accumulation of salt in the hatches, which is used on the streets of New York in snowy weather. Supposedly, the salt damaged the underground electrical wires, which caused the explosions.
As a result of incidents, two people received minor injuries, rescuers checked nearby areas for the level of carbon monoxide in buildings. Residents were also warned that melt water and salts could cause underground explosions and fires and were asked to be careful. According to city services, this happens every winter.
