An immigrant from Odessa was responsible for one of the largest fires in the US

The Oregon District Court sentenced a 15-year-old teenager from a Ukrainian family to paying $ 36,6 million for careless handling of fire, which led to a large forest fire that destroyed almost 20 hectares of forest, writes The Washington Post.

The name of the teenager was not disclosed for security reasons. In court documents, he appears under the initials A.V.

According to the local resource The Oregonian / OregonLive, the young man’s parents moved to the United States from Odessa in the 2000 year. His father worked as a cook in 2017, and his mother was a housewife.

In November, a teenager's mother said that the fire became a “trauma” for her 15-year-old son. She did not specify the name of her son and the causes of the tragedy, fearing the reaction of her big Ukrainian family, the boy’s brothers and sisters.

In February, a teenager admitted his guilt. He threw firecrackers that provoked a fire. He was sentenced to a suspended sentence of 5 and a public work hours in the US Forest Service. He also needed to write 1920 letters apologizing to people whose property was damaged by the fire.

«Каждый день я думаю об этом страшном решении и его ужасных последствиях. Я знаю, что мне придется жить с этим всю оставшуюся жизнь», — сказал мальчик на суде.

The court’s decision states that the defense tried to protest the amount of the compensation, referring to its unconstitutionality and excessiveness, but the judge did not agree with the arguments and left the amount unchanged.

According to RIA News, the young man may not pay 36,6 a million dollars in full, but he will be allowed to stop paying payments only after ten years if he fulfills the conditions of the probationary period and works for the prescribed hours in the Forest Protection Service. In addition, he should not commit other offenses and to comply with the schedule of payments.

As a payment of a fine, funds can be used from the bank account of a teenager, funds that he can receive for reimbursement of tax returns, or money that he can win in the lottery.
