FBI warns of a wave of sexual harassment in aircraft

The number of sexual assaults reported by commercial airlines during flights is increasing at an alarming rate, and the number of actual cases can be much higher. He writes about it CNN with reference to the FBI.

An FBI investigation related to sexual assault and sexual assault revealed that in 2017, the number of incidents increased by 66% compared to 2014 year. The bureau reported that in 2017, 63 opened criminal cases on the fact of sexual abuse in airplanes, compared to 57 in 2016, 40 in 2015 and 38 in 2014.

FBI special agent David Rodski told reporters that the number of sexual attacks during flights is growing “at an alarming rate” and adds: “We don’t know why.”

Last year, CNN reported that it was difficult to determine how often attacks on commercial flights occur, because no federal regulatory agency tracks data across the country.

“The FBI does not have complete confidence in the official number of sexual attacks in the air, as many cases can not be reported,” said Brian Nadau, assistant special agent in charge of the FBI unit in Baltimore. Researchers believe that the numbers are almost certainly much higher.

Rodski said that most of the incidents occurred at night, when flights last three hours or more.

The FBI told CNN that the bureau does not train flight attendants, but is working to increase their awareness so that airlines can develop procedures for what to do in the air.

The Flight Attendants' Association (CWA), one of the world's largest flight attendants union, conducted a survey around 2016 flight attendants about their experiences of sexual assaults in the air in 2000. Among those who responded, 1 from 5 said they received a message about sexual abuse from passengers during the flight. But according to the survey, law enforcement agencies reacted less than half the time.
