What is known about the new US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo

54-year-old Pompeo was sworn in as US Secretary of State. This post dates back to the days of Thomas Jefferson. The Senate 57-th votes against 42-approved the appointment of Pompeo, who replaced Rex Tillerson in this post.

A former congressman from Wichita, Kansas, has already worked as an adviser to President Trump and director of the CIA. He personally provided the president with a daily summary of intelligence information in the Oval Office of the White House.

He will head the State Department at a time when the Foreign Ministry has to resolve a number of important issues, including those related to North Korea, Iran, Russia and China.

The great-grandson of an immigrant from Italy, Mike Pompeo was born and grew up in California, and spent his summer on a family farm in Kansas. He played basketball, he was assigned to give a farewell speech at the end of school, he was twice honored with the title “Best Worker of the Month” at the local ice cream parlor Baskin-Robbins.

At the US Military Academy, he studied at the Faculty of Engineering and was recognized as the best 1986 graduate of the year. In the last years of the Cold War, he served in a tank unit that patrolled the border with East Germany.

After serving in the army, Pompeo graduated from Harvard Law School, was a legal adviser in Washington, then, along with three fellow students at West Point, worked in Wichita for a company manufacturing equipment for the aerospace industry.

Later, Pompeo joined a company producing oil-producing equipment, and on Sundays he taught fifth-graders at the Eastminster Presbyterian Church. He is married, his wife's name is Susan. They have a son Nicholas.

In government service

In the 46 years Pompeo took up politics. In 2010, he won the congressional elections, and was subsequently re-elected three times from his district. In 2017, Donald Trump invited him to work in the presidential administration.

During Senate hearings, Mike Pompeo said that he likes to watch movies, he is interested in the history of the American Revolution, he has a golden retriever, he is a fan of country music and university basketball.

Pompeo called himself the leader of the "blue collar", said he preferred to meet face to face instead of writing emails, and that he never "isolated himself from people when he was on the floor of executives in any administrative buildings."

He promised that the State Department would “best serve the interests of America abroad” and would be “aimed at achieving the president’s foreign policy goals more through uncompromising diplomatic measures than sending our people to war.”

“If we don’t become leaders on the path to democracy, prosperity and respect for human rights around the world, who will do it besides us?” Said Mike Pompeo.
