Trump's lawyer became US ambassador to Israel

The election of President Donald Trump to the post of US ambassador to Israel focused on David Friedman, who was approved by the Senate, overcoming strong opposition from the Democrats.

Friedman was approved by 52 with votes against 46, which is quite unusual, because the US ambassadors in Israel, a country that has long enjoyed strong support from both parties in Congress, were traditionally approved by vote or by unanimous agreement.

Friedman is an Orthodox Jew who has no diplomatic experience and previously served as Trump's bankruptcy lawyer.

In the past, he exaggerated the importance of the two states of the Middle East conflict and attracted funds for Israeli settlements built on land claimed by Palestinians.

He also spoke harshly, accusing the State Department of anti-Semitism and railing against so-called "liberal Jews" supporters of the movement. J street, whom he called "capos". But during his confirmation hearing as ambassador to Israel, Friedman apologized for his past rhetoric and pledged to support U.S. policy.

Republicans appear willing to accept Friedman's apology and assurances that he will take his responsibilities as U.S. ambassador seriously. “David Friedman has the skills and experience to represent the United States in one of the most challenging regions in the world,” Republican Sen. David Perdue of Georgia said in a statement following Friedman's confirmation.

Several Democrats spoke out against his appointment. “We should not risk approving him for this important post. We've already seen its distracting and destructive side,” said Sen. Tom Udall of New Mexico.

One of the key issues that Friedman will face after taking up a new position is the location of the US Embassy in Israel.

Conservative pro-Israel groups want an embassy shift from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. Such a move will cause the anger of many people in the Arab world. Friedman reportedly said that he would live in Jerusalem as an ambassador.
