$ 7 million per km: California is building a wall on the border with Mexico
Project cost - $ 147 mln.
The US Border Guard and Customs Service announced that they had begun work on the modernization of the protective wall on the border with Mexico near the California city of San Diego.
The goal of the project, worth $ 147 million, is to replace more than 20 km of mesh barrier, installed in 1990-ies, with a modern wall. As a result, one kilometer will cost taxpayers $ 7,35 million.
Earlier, two more projects for the construction of sections of the wall were started in California and New Mexico.
A border guard unit operating in the San Diego area and providing security for the 96 km of the US state border in 2017 in the year detained over 26 from thousands of illegal immigrants and confiscated a significant amount of drugs.
Since the election campaign, Donald Trump has called for the construction of a massive wall along the southern border of the United States, arguing that such a project is necessary to combat illegal border crossings.
